Around the World on One Ship

A world cruise is the grandest voyage in travel: months at sea, dozens of ports on several continents, and the slow pleasure of watching the world change outside your window. Most full world cruises run for more than 100 nights, many leave in January to follow the warm seasons around the globe, and nearly all can also be booked in shorter segments.

World Cruise News is a guide to this one kind of trip. We explain what a world cruise is, how segments compare with the full voyage, the routes ships typically follow, when bookings open, the visa and document work involved, and how to pack and stay healthy for months away. We also keep a short, dated list of world cruise announcements, checked on the cruise lines’ own websites.

Full Voyage or Segment?

The full world cruise is a single booking from start to finish, often with extras that segment guests do not get, such as special events, gifts or shore experiences. It suits retired travelers and anyone who can step away from home for a season.

A segment, sometimes called a sector or leg, is one piece of the voyage, typically a few weeks between two major ports such as Sydney, Singapore, Dubai or Cape Town. Segments let you sample the world cruise atmosphere and reach far-flung regions without months away. Many guests combine two or three segments.

Our segments page sets out the trade-offs in detail.

Is a World Cruise Right for You?

A world cruise rewards curiosity and patience. You will have long stretches at sea, early starts for big excursions and the occasional itinerary change. In return you get a rhythm of travel that no fly-and-flop vacation can match. If you are unsure, try a long segment of three or four weeks first.
