A world cruise can take you from a tropical lagoon to a cool spring evening in Europe in the same trip. Packing well means planning for climate, formality, laundry and the reality of living out of one cabin for months.
Layers
Light tropical clothes plus a warm layer and rain jacket for cool, windy decks and higher latitudes.
Evening wear
Several formal or dressy outfits; many lines hold more formal nights on long voyages.
Laundry plan
Check what laundry service is included and whether there are self-service launderettes.
Shoes
Comfortable walking shoes, sandals, deck shoes and one dressy pair.
Respectful dress
Scarves and long sleeves for temples, mosques and churches.
Storage
Collapsible bags and organizers to make the most of cabin space.
Health for Months Away
- See your doctor and dentist well before departure and discuss the full itinerary.
- Check recommended vaccinations and health risks for each region on the CDC destination pages.
- Carry all medicines in original containers, with copies of prescriptions.
- Buy travel medical insurance that covers the whole voyage and medical evacuation; our sister site Cruise & Travel Insurance explains the options.
- Bring sun protection, insect repellent and a small first-aid kit.

Managing Home While You Sail
- Arrange mail forwarding or a trusted person to check post and bills.
- Set up automatic payments and tell your bank and card issuers about your travels.
- Check how the ship’s Wi-Fi is priced and how you will stay in touch with family.
- Make plans for your home, car and pets, and leave a full itinerary with family.
For detailed packing lists, our sister site Cruising Checklist has printable checklists you can adapt for a long voyage.
Staying Fit and Well on Board
Months of generous dining and long days ashore add up. Build a routine early: a morning walk on the promenade deck, a fitness class a few times a week and plenty of water in hot ports. Sleep well before big excursion days, and give yourself quiet sea days to recover. Wash hands often, especially before meals. Most ships have a medical center with doctors and nurses, but serious cases may need treatment ashore, which is why evacuation cover matters so much on remote ocean crossings.
Packing and Health Questions
How much luggage can I bring on a world cruise?
Ships rarely limit what you carry on board, but airlines do. Some world cruisers ship luggage separately, using a service suggested by the line. Ask before you buy extra airline bags.
Can I get prescriptions refilled during the voyage?
Sometimes, but it is unreliable. Bring the full supply you need plus extra, and carry your doctor’s list of medicines with generic names.
