World Cruise Segments vs the Full Voyage
Sail two weeks or four months: the trade-offs.

Most world cruises are sold two ways: as the full voyage and as shorter segments between major ports. Segments open the world cruise to travelers who cannot be away for months, and they are a good way to reach distant regions on a ship with a world cruise atmosphere.
Full Voyage vs Segment
| Full voyage | Segment | |
|---|---|---|
| Time away | Typically 100+ nights | About one to six weeks |
| Flights | Usually one each way | Often long-haul flights to and from distant ports |
| Perks | Lines often add events, gifts or included extras | Fewer exclusive extras |
| Cabin | Same cabin throughout | May need to change cabin between segments unless booked together |
| Community | Strong shipboard community | You join an established community |
| Flexibility | One big commitment | Pick the regions you most want |
Choosing a Segment
- Start with the region. South Pacific islands, Asian cities or African coasts? Each segment has its own personality.
- Check the flights. Segments that start or end in Sydney, Singapore, Dubai or Cape Town mean long flights; factor in time and cost.
- Look for overnights. Segments with overnight stays give more time in key cities.
- Consider sea days. Ocean crossings can mean several days in a row at sea; some love them, others prefer port-heavy legs.
- Check documents. Visas and entry rules apply to the countries on your segment and the ones you fly through.

Building Your Own Grand Voyage
Many guests link two or three segments, or combine a segment with a land stay. For example, you might sail from the US through the Panama Canal to the South Pacific, spend a week in New Zealand, then fly home. Our cruise advisors can map segment dates, flights and hotel nights so the pieces fit together, and explain any shore excursion programs for regions such as Asia (Asia Shore Excursions) and South America (South America Shore Excursions).
Segment Questions
Do segment guests get the same experience?
On board, mostly yes. Full-voyage guests often receive extra events, gifts or shore experiences, and sometimes perks such as included flights, which segment guests may not.
Can I join two segments together?
Usually, yes. Back-to-back segments are common, and some lines sell named combinations. Ask about staying in the same cabin.
Is a segment cheaper per night?
Not necessarily. Pricing varies by line and voyage, and full-voyage bookings sometimes carry benefits that change the comparison. Compare the total value, not just the nightly rate.
Joining Mid-Voyage
Boarding a ship whose full-voyage guests have been together for weeks can feel like joining a new school. Crew are used to it, and most segment guests settle in within a day or two. Join a trivia team or a class early and you will soon feel part of the community.
